The Hunger Games Trilogy

A couple of weeks ago I saw The Hunger Games – the movie. I liked it so much that I decided to read the books as well. I finished reading Mockingjay a few days ago and here is the full trilogy review:
The Hunger Games - The 1st book was high paced and I was glued to the book the entire week it took me to finish it between my daily trips to work in the train. There were no dull moments (which is very rare at least for me) the chapters where Katniss was in the game itself were very intense and that was for granted that they would be interesting because the idea of the story was build around the games, but to my surprise the first half of the book which described the life in present and the past of Katniss's life in district 12 was intriguing.
Catching Fire - The 2nd book started very slow in my opinion. The events from the 1st half of the book described the life of the winners in the district and they were interesting but not exiting. It felt like we’re standing still on one spot without progressing anywhere. The 2nd part of the book was a completely different story. The games were very exciting to read especially Katniss’s attempts to figure out Johanna and Finnick’s hidden agenda. The end was completely anticlimactic (I guess I wanted to see who would turn up to be the winner – the best of the best) but that could be said about the end of the 1st book as well. The only problem was that the 1st book was good from the beginning to the end so in its case the end didn’t hurt it much but the 2nd book wasn’t as good as the 1st (in my opinion) so I expected that the end of the 2nd will compensate the slow paced chapters in the beginning.
Mockingjay – The 3rd book started in the same slow pace as the 2nd book did, the only difference from the 2nd book was that the slow pace continued to the bitter end. It was … all over the place. It reflected the thoughts of mentally unstable Katniss. From one perspective it was fun to read how Katniss attempts to pick herself together from the traumatic events she endured in the 1st two books just to see her fall apart a few chapters later, it felt like there was something missing, a spark of intensity that we had in the previous books. Don’t get me wrong I kept reading the book and enjoyed it a lot. It felt like I kept going just to get to the end in order to discover how the story ends. In this book differently to the previous books, it had a very strong ending. It can be seen a mile away but still strong.
Summery
The 1st book was the most exiting the sequels were slightly weaker but still I recommend this book trilogy, I had a lot of fun joining Katniss into her life journey.

Farrokh’s soliloquy about hippies, at the beginning of the book, is a classic study of an Irani restaurant owner – I know that man, I know that language.”
Desai’s tremendous contribution to Indian fiction in English was recently recognised by the Sahitya Akademi fellowship conferred on her in New Delhi this year. Although she is the seventy-fifth Fellow in the entire history of the Sahitya Akademi, she is only the third Indian writer in English, after Mulk Raj Anand and R.K. Narayan, to be so honored
.
Speaking on the occasion, Desai described the struggle of those early days of writing in the language: “It is true that in my early days as a writer of English I and my colleagues were constantly having to apologies for using it rather than Hindi or Tamil or Bengali or Marathi. We were the leftovers of the colonial age, unfortunately educated in what everyone could see was not a native tongue and surely ours was the last generation that would employ it. Yet we were enjoying the challenges of making the language our own, bending and twisting and manipulating it to express our own way."

Desai is part of a new literary tradition of Indian writing in English which dates back only to the '30s or '40s. She explains that this is because "at one time all literature was recited rather than read and that remains the tradition in India. It is still rather a strange act to buy a book and read it, an unusual thing to do". Her new style of writing is also different from that of many Indian writers, as it is much less conservative than Indian literature has been in the past.

Throughout her novels, children's books, and short stories, Desai focuses on personal struggles and problems of contemporary life that her Indian characters must cope with. She maintains that her primary goal is to discover "the truth that is nine-tenths of the iceberg that lies submerged beneath the one-tenth visible portion we call Reality" . She portrays the cultural and social changes that India has undergone as she focuses on the incredible power of family and society and the relationships between family members, paying close attention to the trials of women suppressed by Indian society.

Desai is praised for her broad understanding on intellectual issues, and for her ability to portray her country so vividly with the way the eastern and western cultures have blended there. She has received numerous awards, including the 1978 National Academy of Letters Award for Fire on the Mountain. The story is of a remote, isolated woman and her equally withdrawn great-granddaughter as they are forced together in hills surrounded by violence and fire. In 1983 she was awarded the Guardian Prize for Children's Fiction for The Village by the Sea, an adventurous fairy tale about a young boy living in a small fishing village in India and the Literary Lion Award in 1993, and has also been named Helen Cam Visiting fellow, Ashby fellow, and honorary fellow of the University of Cambridge.

About the movie ‘Oblivion’
Jack Harper is one of the last drone repairmen having been stationed on earth. He is working on an operation to obtain paramount resources after many years of war. In the process of doing so Jack has to deal with a thereat known as Scavs. Jack has almost completed the operation. Just when you thought that everything in the movie is going fine, things take a turn.

The movie portrays Jack as someone who regards sky as his home. Things do not remain the same for this character who literally lives in the sky after a rescue operation. He rescues a beautiful female stranger from a spacecraft which is downed. A chain of events follows and the way this movie unfolds is rather interesting.

This movie has it all, a great story, powerful cast and good post-production work. This makes it worth watching.

Synopsis:

Abnegation(The Selfless), Amity(The Peaceful), Candor(The Honest), Erudite(The Intelligent) and Dauntless(The Brave), each of these factions have certain rules and principles to follow, but each faction is vital for the survival and safety of the government those who doesn't fit into any one faction are called Divergent and are considered dangerous. Sixteen year old Beatrice "Tris" Prior was just another girl, and every time a person turns sixteen he/she gets to choose whether to transfer to another faction or stay in the one they grew on. After taking an aptitude test she later finds out that she is a Divergent not because didn't into any one faction but because she had equal test results for three which was rare. She was advised to choose a faction in order to hide what she is and was told not to tell anyone even her family or she'll be killed. Keeping that big of a secret is hard especially when your life is on the line. She later chooses Dauntless and met trainer Tobias "Four" Eaton. After a certain test Four finds out that Tris is a Divergent. Knowing that Four knows what she is, she must decide whether to trust him or not as her life depends on it.

Review:

Neil Burger has brought yet another masterpiece to the big screen, the first one being Limitless, starring Bradley Cooper, Abbie Cornish and Robert De Niro. The audience are introduced to some famous faces in the acting industry and to some new ones as well.

When Beatrice "Tris" Prior (Shailene Woodley) find out that she is a Divergent, a person who is considered dangerous in their society, she must choose whether to stay in her faction, transfer to another one, be faction less or be killed. She eventually chooses a faction and tries her to keep her secret. A Dauntless trainer name Tobias "Four" Eaton (Theo James) finds out about her secret but chooses to keep quiet about it.

The film was really a great entertainment with its colorful casts and extreme stunts. Burger really did well using actors who are experienced in different kinds of genres of movies. Kate Winslet really showed that she can play any role given to her and what a despicable antagonist she can be. Zoë Kravitz was almost unreconizable, shifting from the hot and seductive Angel Salvadore in X-Men First Class to the tough yet friendly Christina. Theo James really transformed from the cold hearted killer David in Underworld:Awakening to the strict yet gentle hearted Tobias.

What really gave this reviewer a pause was the lead actress Shailene Woodley as Beatrice "Tris" Prior. She used to have been a typical girl next door, undeceive and dependent in The Secret Life of an American Teenager and rebellious in The Descendants but for her to be so daring and fierce was really a shocker. After an hour I was convinced that whoever did the casting did a swell job, as Woodley represented the fearless and intelligent Beatrice Prior spectacularly.

The runs for 139 minutes which is a bit long. There were some scenes that seemed dragging but the action scenes and beautiful dialogue really made the audience stick their eyes to the screen. The plot was clearly set into a distant future but what happened to rest of the world was oblivious to the audience and all we know is that there was a war and that some places still hasn't recovered from it.

Despite some shortcomings, Divergent is exciting and thrilling. Set in a dystopian post-apocalyptic Chicago, Divergent has the same action packed sequence and plot as The Hunger Games and Catching Fire and the romanticism of The Twilight Saga but is definitely better than the these combined, that leave you at the edge of your seats, make you want to watch it over and over again and still leave craving for more. This is definitely one movie
that is worth your time.

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is about Trisha McFarland, a nine-year-old girl, who sets off on a six-mile hike along the Appalachian Trail with her older brother, Pete, and her recently divorced mother. Exasperated by the never-ending squabbles between her mother and brother, she strays off the trail and then, in an attempt to catch up through a short cut, she becomes lost in the wilds: a labyrinth of unseen danger and terror. As darkness approaches, her only defense is her clever imagination, and the courage and conviction to overcome her escalating fears. She tunes her Walkman to Boston Red Sox baseball games for some comfort, and follows the performances of her idol, relief pitcher Tom Gordon. As her radio’s reception begins to wane, Trisha imagines that Tom Gordon is with her – shielding and guarding her against an unseen, but real, enemy, who has left behind traces of wrecked trees and butchered animals in the woods. God Father, by Mario Puzo was written about three decades ago. However, I got the privilege of reading this timeless classic only recently. The book fits in to a nicety in any generation. The book is an epic on the depiction of crime and the underworld mafia. At the centre of the plot is Don Vito Corleone , the head of Corleone family who is a master strategist and a man who is a revered manwith Sicillian blood. THE DON, as he is addressed to is the supremo of a underworld that lurks below everyday hustle n bustle of New York. The book highlights the conflict between the Corleone family and the eight other Sicilian families for the dominant share of the New York underworld. The book spans the life and times of Vito Corleone and the way his son succeeds him. God Father is a web woven around the Corleone family and other Italian families and their constant infighting. The storyline is set in post World War II. The script pans two continents, Europe represented by the serene village backdrop of Sicily, and North America depicted by the dark alleys of NY and all the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas. The story narration is swift and the book is racy as the reader hangs on to each page not knowing what to expect next. The characterizations are superb and each character that appears in the God Father leaves behind a ghost that haunts the reader long after completing the book. God Father delves deep into the heart of the underworld and gives a rare insight into the structure, hierarchy and functioning of the Italian mafia. The inherent power struggle and constant churning of the Mafia are very well described. The book also shows how vulnerable are the politicians, police and various industries to the underworld. Plot
A man by the name Charlie drives a van into the parking garage and encounters a man with a rifle. The rifle man shoots at random and kills five people in a row. A man by the name James Barr, who is an army person has been arrested for this barbarous act. However, Emerson who is a detective and the police soon find out evidence from the crime spot and at James Barr’s house. At his interrogation, he requests the District Attorney, Alex Rodin and Emerson to look out for Jack Reacher, the hero of the movie. Jack Reacher is a guy who is a drifter and a former Army Military Officer. He reaches on time and the rest of the movie is action packed.

This crime movie was directed and screen played by Christopher McQuarrie. This movie was produced by four people: Tom Cruise, Paula Wagner, Gary Levinsohn and Dana Goldberg. The stars in the movie are:

The LEGO Movie Videogame. In a scenario drawn from the film, The LEGO Movie Videogame puts LEGO kids into the role of Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. Players guide him as he is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

The Movie game ( lego ) , in every way , live up to the potential shown in the previous LEGO games . You have all the same silliness , the same kind of a puzzle , and so on , so many things to unlock . So , basically , if you like the previous LEGO games , and want more of the same , this is for you . I can tell , just like in the movie . There is a world of LEGO inhabited by Emmet ,  a normal ordinary person who knows that he is "Special " , and goes on a quest to save the world from the evil Lord Business . Along the way , he met the likes of Batman , Abraham Lincoln , and every character Morgan Freeman recently rolled into one , and learned that sometimes outside the building instructions are ok . As a special added bonus , all the characters are voiced by the actors from the movie , so you get Morgan Freeman , Will Farrell , Liam Neeson , etc. You will beat the main game with about 40 percent of the actual game is finished , and spend the rest of your life and character unlocking items . Not that it is a bad thing . You may also have a lot of fun , because , come on , LEGO video games , of late , is quite amazing . Oh , and I hope you do not mind " Everything is Awesome ! " Song from the film because it will be your new best friend in this game . It is a very good video game for anyone of approximately five years and above . I'm forty-one and I still enjoy it , as well as the other LEGO games . The fact that I am quite into LEGO , and has been there since I was little , help in this regard . But regardless . It is a fun game , and I highly recommend it .
